A Message from our Board of Directors

June 17, 2021

To our Reading In Motion Community,

The Reading In Motion Board of Directors is proud to share that as of June 1, 2021, Interim Executive Director, Gabriel Gonzalez, will serve as the next permanent Executive Director of Reading In Motion. Gabe has led our expansion efforts in Las Vegas since 2018 as the Regional Executive Director and was appointed to the role of Interim Executive Director in December 2020. He is dedicated to ensuring equitable access to education to improve the lives of students. Gabe comes from a diverse background, dedicating himself to student learning as a teacher, school administrator, learning management director, and leader of a multi-state division while holding licenses for teaching, administration, and superintendent of schools. He has served as a board of director, governor’s council member on education, consultant, and member of several education associations. With this robust experience, we trust he will lead Reading In Motion well into the future.

As the situation in our country has evolved over the last year, so has our program. We quickly adapted our approach to ensure students continued to make progress toward reaching their reading goals in spite of the challenges of remote learning. Immediately we began development of accessible, virtual tools and resources as part of our new program, Reading Together, Anywhere! We helped to bring the classroom home for students, parents, and teachers across the country. However, these necessary efforts did not come without a cost, and due to declining school enrollment and financial uncertainty resulting from the global pandemic, we have worked tirelessly to expand and innovate our model. These important next steps include: re-affirming our mission, strengthening our programming, and setting a path forward to serve more students than ever before!

“Reading In Motion has made great strides in serving the needs of underprivileged students and ensuring that every child experiences learning to read in a way that fosters creativity and imagination. We are serving a growing need that has been expanded by the impacts on education in cities nationwide. In looking to the future, Reading In Motion is adapting practices now to ensure young learners have the skills they need to succeed in an uncertain future. Meeting students where they are, whether online or in buildings, everyone at RIM is coming together to design and create high-quality, research-based, data-driven literacy tools and resources that will help teachers inspire their classes, preparing them for success now and beyond.”

–Gabriel Gonzalez, Reading In Motion Executive Director

We’re so excited for all the future has in store for our organization, and we’re eager to continue serving our country’s youngest readers in new ways! Reading In Motion has always been a community-centric organization, and we will maintain that focus on our community. That means YOU. We’re calling on our stakeholders now to provide guidance and support as we pilot our organization forward. Our work wouldn’t be possible without your help, and we encourage you to get involved by joining our Reading Ahead: Vision 2024 Steering Committee, serving on our Board of Directors, joining our Auxiliary Board, or making a donation in support of our programming.

Together, we can ensure every student is a reader!

Sincerely,

Jill Fraggos, Board Chair
