Executive Director, Co-Founder
Karl Androes, Executive Director, co-founded Reading In Motion (founded as Whirlwind) in 1983. Karl has guided Reading In Motion to become one of the most effective literacy organizations to raise Kindergarten and 1st grade students’ reading scores to grade level benchmarks or above.
Under Karl’s leadership, Reading In Motion has become known for a disciplined approach to results, utilizing rigorous outside studies of program effectiveness.
Trained as a classical musician, Karl served for 11 years as a board member for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, which is the training orchestra of the Chicago Symphony. Karl was the 2003 recipient of the Benjamin Gingiss Service Award from the Illinois Humane Society.
Director of Development
Adrienne Brooks, Director of Development, joined Reading In Motion in January 2017.
Director of Programs
Pana Campbell, Director of Programs, has an extensive background in education and Reading In Motion. Prior to joining our team, Pana was a Reading Specialist and RtI Facilitator for the Pleasantdale School District in the southwest suburbs. She started her career as a classroom teacher in Indiana. She later became a Literacy Coach at McAuliffe Elementary School in Chicago. For seven years, she focused on providing teachers with the support needed to implement various instructional programs and practices, and there she was introduced to Reading in Motion. She worked with our staff and coaches to implement our program. She has earned her M.Ed in Reading from National Louis University, her B.A. in Elementary Education from Purdue University, and is National Board Certified in Literacy: Reading-Language Arts.
Director of New Site Development
Scott Caulfield joined Reading in Motion in 2016 as the Director of New Site Development. Prior to joining our team, he was with Swivl as their Director of Channels & Sales. He started his career as a classroom teacher at Twin Creeks Middle School in Spring ISD. While at Twin Creeks he founded the school newspaper (The Echo), was Head Basketball Coach and was named 2005 Teacher of the Year Runner-Up. After teaching, Scott spent 9 years with Promethean as an Educational Consultant. At Promethean he started the popular podcast, ActivTips, and was Employee of the Year in 2010.
Scott has been a featured presenter at The Ron Clark Academy Conference, Dr. Pickering’s Integration Workshop, FETC, TCEA, METC, TIES, MEC, MOREnet & ITEC.
Scott earned his BS in Education from Indiana University and is currently serving on the Indiana University School of Education Alumni Board of Directors.
Regional Partnership Manager
Kate Goshorn, Regional Partnership Manager, started with Reading In Motion in 2012 and has served as the Extra Dosage Program Manager and Manager of New School Partnerships before moving to her current role. Kate has worked in the Chicago non-profit community for 17 years, including work with Illinois Action for Children, McCormick Foundation and Chicago Public Schools. Kate holds a Masters of Journalism degree from Northwestern and a BA in Sociology from DePaul University.
Manager, Corporate & Foundation Relations
Rebekah Hall, Manager of Corporate and Foundation Relations, joined Reading In Motion in 2016 after serving as a Senior Proposal Manager at ICF International for many years, and as a freelance grant writer for various non-profit organizations and advocacy groups. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and is a co-founder and volunteer arts programming coordinator for a Chicago artist collective called HI typ/O Salon. She is an avid reader and believes in the powerful, sustainable impact of Reading In Motion’s vision to give all children a chance in life through literacy.
Little Tom Jackson
Little Tom Jackson, Coach, has worked with Reading In Motion since 1989. Prior, Little was the Artistic Coordinator for the LaMont Zeno Theatre at Better Boys Foundation for about four years where he helped students create stories they wanted to tell and bring them to life on the stage. Little has appeared in numerous productions around Chicago, working with City Lit Theater Company at the Organic and the Bailiwick theatres. Little is fluent in American Sign Language and works with the Deaf community to teach them how to facilitate their own lives. He studied theatre and psychology at Loyola University.
Curriculum Content Leader and Program Author
Elizabeth Johnston, Curriculum Content Leader and Program Author, came to Reading In Motion in June of 1993. Since that time, Elizabeth has been responsible for curriculum development and refinement, focusing on the use of data to drive instruction and inform her writing as the author of the curricula. Under her direction Reading In Motion’s curricula and research have gained national recognition in the Journal of Educational Research (2000) and Evaluation Review (2003). She holds a BFA degree in art and minor in dance from Rockford College.
Coaching Team Leader
Karina Lepeley, Coaching Team Leader, joined in July 2011. As Coaching Team Leader, Karina supports coaches with observations in the field as well as weekly meetings to hear coach concerns, brainstorm possibilities, and provide support. She is committed to an ongoing professional development for coaches that includes each coach’s personal vision of success. She supports the Racine United School District Dual Language program with monthly professional development for their Peer Collaborator Network. She continues to work in the field coaching teachers with both English and Spanish students. She also supervises the Reading In Motion Spanish Program.
Extra Dosage Program/Data Manager
Emily Litvak, Extra Dosage Program & Strategic Analyst, joined the Reading in Motion team in 2015. Prior to Reading in Motion, Emily spent four years teaching in preschool classrooms and two years working in the nonprofit sector. Emily holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Lisa McManus, Coach, joined Reading in Motion in 2015 with 14 years of education experience as a classroom teacher, literacy consultant and executive function coach. She started her teaching career in Michigan in a 4th grade classroom and has since taught K-3 in Atlanta, GA and Chicago, IL. Lisa has a Master’s degree in reading and literacy and in her spare time loves to read, teach group fitness classes, and take her Shihpoo, Judy, for walks around her neighborhood.
Becca Menke joined Reading in Motion as a Bilingual Coach in June 2015. Prior to Reading in Motion, she worked for four years as a bilingual elementary school teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools and Chicago Public Schools. She holds a BA in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a MA in Bilingual Urban Education from Cardinal Stritch University. In her spare time, she leads a pace group for a marathon training program, participates in a book club, and loves to complete the daily crossword puzzle in the Trib.
Chief Operating Officer
Jason Patenaude, Chief Operating Officer, has spent two decades developing and scaling organizations, with a focus on education and media. Prior to joining Reading in Motion, Jason was most recently COO of Cricket Media, a leading children’s media and educational content company. In his work Jason takes a data-driven leadership approach that leverages innovation and operational rigor to drive growth. He earned his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, a BA in English from Bates College, and he served as Treasurer of the Children’s Literacy Foundation.
Saralyn Peritz joined Reading In Motion in 2016 as Finance Manager. She earned a B.A. in Elementary Education, after which circumstances led her into accounting and finance, where she’s worked for over 30 years. Ten years ago, she moved into the nonprofit financial management world to make a more direct contribution towards “making the world a better place.” She believes that working with young people has great impact in that regard, in that the effect lasts for years later. In her spare time, Saralyn runs, does all the Sun-Times puzzles, and cuddles with her cats.
Avo began working with Reading In Motion in 1991. Avo has worked as an independent musician, performer, recording artist, and sound engineer since 1983 and has taught both in schools and privately since 1986. Avo performs vocals, keyboards, percussion, and writes for Algorhythms, which has appeared three times at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and has toured in East Asia and Taiwan. Avo received his BA in English at Western Illinois University and his MA in ethnomusicology at Tufts University.
Jeff Sklenar, Accountant. Jeff joined Reading in Motion in 2014 after building a strong career in accounting in various industries and organizations. After his service in the U.S. Air Force, Jeff got his B.S. at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and took his accounting skills to the corporate world, working for many years in the food service industry. He began working for non-profits, including a Chicago based neighborhood housing organization and a health advocacy group, before coming to Reading In Motion. His experience with the accounting challenges of non-profits and dedication to service are what make Jeff a valuable asset to Reading In Motion.
Director of Marketing and Sales
Elaine Teter, Director of Marketing and Sales, brings more than 20 years of marketing, sales and public relations experience to Reading In Motion. Elaine started her career at AT&T where she honed her corporate public relations skills.Through the years, she’s worked on both the client side as well as the agency side where some of her clients included a start-up company in the eyewear industry and boutique clothing shops to industry associations and major corporations. Elaine holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Katherine Wajrowski, Regional Partnership Manager, started with Reading In Motion in 2017. A Chicago area native, Katherine comes to Reading In Motion with five years of experience working directly with Chicago Public Schools in the community nonprofit setting. With her degree in Community Health and Wellness from Northeastern Illinois University and personal history growing up in a family of educators, Katherine is passionate about helping schools reach holistic success and level the playing field for all students.
